Australian Public Transport
Transcript
Nearly two in three Australians drive to work in a private car while only one in 10 commuters relies on public transport, a study of census data has found. The increased availability and affordability of cars in Australia inspires Australians to travel further than was possible before. Because of the special Australian living patterns, most Australians need cars. Most of them live in countryside and it will be inconvenient for them to work without a car when their working place is far away from home. Only 20% of people in Australia do not drive, mainly the elderly, young students or the disabled. Australian public transportation system in rural areas is not yet satisfactory. Thus, the Australian government is paying more attention to those who do not drive, by offering better public transportation. Yet from long commutes and high car dependency to the low provision of affordable housing in the more appealing areas, Australian cities still have plenty of room for improvement. But it may lead to other problems and still has some big impact.
