Similarity between music and language
Transcript
Every human culture that we know has music and human language, these are universal and go way back to our species history. So the question is what are these two things might have in common have occurred to a lot of people. To be more specific, they both have complex sequence and form communication. It is also an interesting philosophy since Plato going back over 2000 years. Scientists including Darwin who wrote the possible evolutionary links between music and language in his book.
So it is persistent question and I think it continuously drawn interest from scientists today because there are some basic obvious similarities. For example, both music and language have rhythm by which I mean systematic pattern of timing, accent and grouping, they both have melody, meaning the structure pattern of pitch over time, and they both have the syntax, describing elements like notes or words and the principle to combine those elements in sequences since they are just random sequence of words and musical melody and compositions that are far from random sequences and notes. And they both convey emotion by using sound, you can someone’s emotion by the sound of their voices, you can get a lot of emotion information from music – it could be happiness, sadness and mixed emotion or whatever emotion you have.
But how similar they are really when you put them under microscope and look into them more closely.
