Different Types of Corrosion
The three different types of corrosion: Pitting and cavity corrosion, Contact corrosion and Crevice corrosion can be prevented with the correct corrosion (rust) prevention treatment methods. Pitting and cavity corrosion occurs on unprotected steels used in infrastructure and can reduce the strength and thickness of steel. Contact corrosion occurs at the point of contact when a non-rusting stainless steel comes in contact with another piece of rusted metal and can be spread beyond the contact point. Depending on changes in temperature, humidity, geographical location (nearer the sea, windy and rainy sites) Crevice corrosion occurs in the gap (in confined spaces) between a nut and a bolt. The level of Crevice corrosion is highest at sea level due to the higher concentration of salt. Corrosion occurs at production, transportation, and storage level. Corrosion occurs at any stage of its manufacturing process when a piece of iron (or its alloys, such as steel) comes in contact with oxygen and water. As corrosion occurs only on the surface and not inside the metal, if treated, removed or prevented timely from accumulating on the surface, metal can be saved. As the metal is constantly exposed to air and water during manufacturing process (cutting the metal into shape, machining to refine metal’s figure, and milling of the metal) rusting occurs on surface of the metal. Corrosion could occur during sea shipping and land freight as the metal is exposed to oxygen and water. Rusting occurs during the storage If metal products (spare parts, tools, or other equipment) are not properly packaged or protected, from air and moisture. When infrastructure of iron or steel framework exposed to air and water, they also corrode.
